1. Who is Dawson Whitfield and what business did you start?

I am Dawson Whitfield, the founder of Looka, an AI-powered platform designed to make logo creation easy, affordable, and accessible to everyone. My journey began after spending nearly a decade as a professional designer. Over time, I realised how frustrating and repetitive the process of designing logos could be. There was a lot of back-and-forth with clients, and at times, I felt more like I was just picking fonts rather than doing creative work.

This experience made me think about how technology could simplify the process for people who need logos but cannot afford expensive designers or spend weeks on revisions. That is what led me to start Looka in 2016. My goal was to create a tool that combines creativity with technology to help anyone design professional logos and branding with ease.

2. How did you get the idea of Looka and what problem does it solve?

When I came up with the idea for Looka, it was rooted in my frustration as a logo designer. For nearly a decade, I worked with clients to create logos, but the process often felt repetitive and unnecessarily complicated. I would spend hours on revisions, feeling more like a “glorified font picker” than a designer. It was clear that many small business owners needed affordable, professional branding but could not afford the time or cost of hiring a designer.

I realised there had to be a better way. By exploring technology, I saw the potential of AI to simplify and democratise design. Millions of businesses need logos each year, so the demand was clear. I validated this by researching trends and market needs, which showed a growing interest in logo-making tools. This encouraged me to build a solution that could empower anyone to design their branding effortlessly and affordably.

Looka addresses a pain point for entrepreneurs by offering a tool that delivers custom designs without requiring technical skills or hefty budgets. It bridges the gap between professional design quality and accessibility, solving a significant problem for small businesses worldwide.

3. How did you create the first version of Looka?

Creating the first version of Looka was an exciting but challenging journey. I partnered with Andrew B. Martin, who became the CTO, to bring the idea to life. We wanted the platform to be intuitive yet powerful, so integrating machine learning into the design process was key. 

We spent about two and a half months building the initial version, using PHP, MySQL, and jQuery as the core technologies. The biggest challenge was creating a system that could understand and adapt to user preferences. For instance, we built a mechanism to track user interactions, like the designs they favoured and the changes they made. This data helped the AI improve its output and offer personalised design recommendations.

Another hurdle was collecting enough data to make the AI effective. We had to compile a rich database of fonts, colours, layouts, and other design elements. Each component needed to work seamlessly with the others to produce professional-quality logos. It was all about ensuring the tool felt like a real designer at your fingertips.

Though it was tough at times, the process taught us the importance of starting lean and focusing on user needs. We launched with a functional, no-frills version and then fine-tuned it based on feedback, ensuring every improvement made the platform better for the users.

4. What is the process you followed to launch your business and how did you get your initial customers?

Launching Looka was all about making a big splash while staying resourceful. We wanted to reach our target audience quickly, so we focused on three main strategies: a Product Hunt launch, social media outreach, and pay-per-click advertising.

1. Product Hunt Launch:

When it came time to launch Looka, I knew that getting noticed quickly was crucial. Product Hunt is a platform where tech enthusiasts and early adopters go to discover new products, so I decided to leverage it for visibility. I strategically chose a Tuesday for the launch, as it is one of the best days for getting exposure. To make sure we got noticed, I had someone with posting power on Product Hunt submit Looka, which helped us get an immediate 100 upvotes. This launch gave us a massive boost, with site traffic increasing almost instantly. As a result, we saw a significant number of people checking out the platform and signing up for the service.

 

2. Social Media Outreach:

In the early stages, social media played a huge role in spreading the word about Looka. I turned to my personal network on platforms like Facebook and Twitter to share the product. I knew that by reaching out to my friends, family, and business acquaintances, I could generate initial interest. This method proved effective as those in my network shared their positive experiences, which led to word-of-mouth marketing. This organic growth helped us gain our first few customers and proved that our product was resonating with people.

 

3. Pay-Per-Click Advertising:

To amplify the reach and drive targeted traffic, I decided to experiment with pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. I started by investing $250 per day, which allowed us to bring in around 1,800 visitors daily. The ads targeted users who were actively searching for logo design solutions, ensuring we reached people already interested in the service. The cost per click was around $0.20, making this a very cost-effective way to introduce Looka to a broader audience. It helped bring in steady traffic and led to sign-ups and logo purchases.

These combined efforts of launching on Product Hunt, leveraging social media, and using PPC ads allowed Looka to gain its first customers quickly and start building a solid customer base from the outset.

5. What strategies have you found effective in attracting and retaining customers? 

Here are the strategies that have helped Looka attract and retain customers:

1. SEO Strategy:

One of the most effective strategies for attracting customers has been focusing on SEO. From the beginning, I understood the importance of ranking high on search engines for relevant keywords. We created informative, valuable content, such as “How To Make a Logo,” that not only answered common questions but also drove traffic through organic search. The content was designed to be shareable, and we made sure it resonated with users. Over time, this content helped Looka rank for key terms and bring in a consistent stream of traffic, which led to more users discovering our platform.

2. Offering Valuable Tools:

Another strategy that has worked well is offering additional tools that complement the logo-making process. For example, we introduced a business name generator to help users brainstorm ideas, and this added an extra layer of value to the platform. The name generator also gave us another way to drive traffic through strategic keyword targeting, allowing us to attract users who might not have come for the logo tool initially.

3. Word-of-Mouth Marketing:

Word-of-mouth has played a huge role in Looka’s success. After our initial launch, users who were impressed with our service started sharing their positive experiences. This kind of organic marketing is incredibly powerful, as people tend to trust recommendations from friends or acquaintances more than traditional advertisements. By providing an easy-to-use platform that delivered professional-quality logos at an affordable price, Looka generated a buzz that led to more referrals.

4. Customer Support and Engagement:

Customer support has always been a priority for us. We focused on providing fast, helpful responses to any queries, ensuring users felt valued. Additionally, we have made efforts to engage with our users by gathering feedback and using it to improve the platform. This has helped us build trust and keep customers coming back. When customers feel like their opinions matter and see that their feedback leads to improvements, they’re more likely to stay loyal to the product.

5. Regular Updates and New Features:

Looka’s ability to scale and evolve has been another key factor in customer retention. By regularly updating the platform with new features and improvements, we’ve been able to keep the user experience fresh and exciting. These updates not only add more value to our existing users but also help us stay ahead of competitors in a constantly changing market. Whether it’s adding new design options or improving the AI technology behind the platform, keeping things new has been a great way to keep customers engaged.

6. What business lesson you learned while building and scaling Looka?

While building and scaling Looka, I’ve learned several key business lessons:

1. The Importance of Solving a Clear Problem

From the very beginning, I focused on solving a real pain point. I realised that logo design, though essential for every business, was often too expensive or complex for small business owners. By simplifying the process through AI, I provided a solution that made professional design accessible to everyone. This experience taught me that when you address a specific problem, you can create a product that resonates deeply with customers.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Fail and Learn from It  

There were many times when things didn’t go as planned, especially during the early stages. From technical challenges to misunderstandings in the market, I faced my fair share of setbacks. However, I quickly learned that failure isn’t something to fear. Each mistake offered valuable lessons, and I made sure to use them to refine the platform. Resilience is key in entrepreneurship if you keep learning from your failures and adapt, you’ll eventually find success.

3. Focus on User Experience  

Building a user-friendly product was critical to Looka’s success. In the early days, I realised that if the platform wasn’t easy to use and intuitive, people wouldn’t stick around, even if the designs were good. Investing time in crafting a smooth user experience has been one of the most important decisions I made. A product that’s easy to use builds trust, reduces friction, and ultimately increases customer satisfaction and retention.

4. SEO is a Long-Term Strategy with Huge Payoff  

In the early days, I didn’t fully appreciate the power of SEO. But once we started focusing on it, we saw massive benefits. By investing in creating quality content and optimising our site, we attracted organic traffic and didn’t have to rely heavily on paid ads. I’ve learned that SEO is a long-term game, and while it requires patience, it pays off by providing sustainable growth and free traffic.

5. Expanding Gradually Based on Market Feedback

I also learned the value of expanding slowly. Initially, we focused on logo creation, and once we had built a solid customer base, we expanded to additional features like the business name generator. Rather than trying to offer everything at once, it was more effective to listen to customer feedback and then scale based on their needs. This approach helped us build a more loyal customer base and keep users engaged.

6. Invest in Marketing Early  

Finally, I realised that effective marketing can make or break a business. Whether it’s leveraging platforms like Product Hunt or using word-of-mouth marketing, getting the word out early and consistently is crucial. It’s easy to get caught up in the product development, but without marketing, even the best product can fail to reach its potential customers.

These lessons, from solving a clear problem to learning from failure, have shaped how Looka operates today. They have not only helped me build a strong, successful brand but also provided valuable insights into running a business in a competitive market.

9. What advice would you give young entrepreneurs who are just starting or looking to get started?

If you’re just starting, focus on solving a real problem and validating your idea early. Start small but think big, and embrace failures as opportunities to learn. Keep things simple, focus on customer experience, and stay persistent, even when things get tough. Build a strong network of supporters and always be open to feedback and pivoting. Most importantly, stay curious and keep learning. Success takes time, but consistency will get you there.
